Location: Global Calgary
Global News is currently seeking a casual Weather Anchor to join its dynamic team. This position reports to the Global Calgary Station Manager/News Director . The successful candidate will be required to work a variety of shifts, including early mornings, evenings and weekends, with a focus on telling Calgary and Lethbridge’s weather stories on-air and online, delivering live forecasts and breaking weather coverage. This position will be based at Global Calgary but will also support Global Lethbridge.
About the Role
The following is an outline of some of the primary functions and responsibilities for this position:
Plan, produce and present live, dynamic, informative weather forecasts on Global News Morning, Global News at Noon and Global News Radio CHQR
Report live on-location when required
Research and develop original, creative story ideas relating to weather
Actively use social media to connect with our audience and enhance our weather coverage
Write, post and promote weather content for globalnews.ca
Pitch, book and conduct interviews during Global News Morning and Global News at Noon
Participate in daily editorial planning meetings
Participate in Global News promotional and community activities as required
Pitch and create compelling multi-media web content and share to social media (Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, etc.)
Liaise with other Global News meteorologists and weather anchors to develop and support best practices for our weather forecasts and story telling
Stay informed of local and national news and weather events
What We Need From You:
The successful candidate will possess the following qualifications:
Post-secondary diploma, certificate or equivalent, in a broadcasting related field
Meteorology Degree and/or Canadian Meteorology and Oceanographic Society (C.M.O.S.) accreditation
A minimum of 3 years on-air experience in a medium or large market
Strong on-air presentation skills, with an emphasis on live remote abilities and unscripted material
Experience using computerized weather graphics systems
Expertise of new media tools and technologies (Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, etc)
Must be able to handle the demands and pressure of multiple, daily online and broadcast deadlines
A strong familiarity with Global News, both online and on air
Working knowledge of how major news organizations are employing a wide range of digital platforms and formats
Willingness to adapt to rapidly changing technology and workflows
Enthusiasm and passion for all forms of news - with an emphasis on local weather news - as well as a keen interest in technology and digital media
The successful candidate will be a “plugged-in” multi-tasker with a positive can-do attitude and proven ability to make editorial decisions.
