Editorial Assistant (ON) - News Gathering
About the Role
Reporting to the Managing Editor, Network Planning & Coordination, you will be responsible for helping the network editorial team administer, pitch, chase, develop and execute multiplatform stories. The position will be based in Toronto, Ontario.
The successful candidate should have working knowledge of how major news organizations are storytelling on a wide range of platforms. The candidate must be able to adapt to a rapidly changing media and technology landscape and handle the pressure of daily news deadlines. We require someone with a high level of organization to assist with longer-term projects and a working knowledge of newsroom applications as well as social media tools and technologies (Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, etc.)
Administer, pitch, and research daily and longer-term news, feature and investigative stories
Develop assigned stories for network/national news
Assist in tracking, monitoring, and documenting news production throughout the day to support the network
Assist the network reporters, producers, assignment desk with chasing and lining up interviews and additional news gathering as needed
Assist in execution/production of live news events
Assist in scripting of online copy and broadcast copy
Monitor wires, twitter and social media for stories and breaking news
Source stock footage, check for agency footage and clips
Stay constantly informed of local, national and international news
What We Need From You:
College or university degree (or equivalent experience), preferably in Journalism.
Minimum of 2 years previous experience in television news
Excellent organizational skills and the ability to work in a fast-paced environment
Experience chasing interviews in a breaking news environment with established contacts
Must be able to handle the demands and pressure of multiple, daily broadcast deadlines
Positive can-do attitude
