About the Role:

Global BC is looking for a temporary, full-time Video Journalist to join the #1 newsroom in Western Canada. Reporting to the Managing Editor, this position will include a variety of shifts including early mornings, days, evenings and weekends. This is a 9 month position covering a leave of absence in Victoria, starting as early as November 2019. This is a Group 5 position under the current collective agreement.


  • Shoot, edit and report on a wide range of stories, from breaking news to features;

  • Generate and craft original stories daily, including breaking news;

  • Strong proficiency in story judgement, writing, shooting and editing;

  • Demonstrated ability to report live in breaking news situations;

  • Ability to monitor other news sources, as well as come up with original material for Global News, BC1 and online;

  • Present live on a variety of platforms including on-air, webcam and live blogs;

  • Proven strong news judgement and editorial experience;

  • Strong news writing skills;

  • Demonstrated ENG shooting and editing skills;

  • Solid research abilities;

  • Considerable amount of driving, including long distances;

  • Ability to handle the demands and pressure of multiple, daily online and broadcast deadlines;

  • Other duties as required

About You

What We Need From You:

  • Minimum 5 years TV reporting, shooting and editing in a medium/large television market;

  • Degree or diploma in Broadcast Journalism or a related field from a recognized institution;

  • Working knowledge of how major news organizations employ a wide range of digital platforms and formats;

  • Comprehensive computer knowledge, including that of leading edge newsroom management systems (ie. ENPS), and edit programs;

  • Willingness to adapt to rapidly changing technology and workflows, as well as a willingness to learn new online skills in a multi-faceted digital news operation;

  • Experience and ease with Facebook, Twitter and other social media sites;

  • Ability to write/produce web, text and manage content through social media;

  • On-air experience required;

  • Valid driver’s license and clean driving record

  • Experience in updating online and broadcast content with a content management system an asset;

  • Self-start with a can-do attitude and a proven ability to work well independently and in a team environment
